Abstract

Proclus’ Tomus is a document with high theological value. The patriarch’s response came after the Symbol of Union and before the Council of Chalcedon. This paper looks at its possible influence on the decision that followed. Toward that end, it compares the content of the Tomus with documents that preceded the Council and those from the Council itself in the year AD 451. It examines the technical vocabulary used in the Tomus, comparing it with the ways those terms were understood both before and after. The article then compares the Christological statements in the Tomus with those in those same documents. Finally, the article summarizes the salvific outcomes that Proclus identifies as related to the economy of the incarnation.
