Abstract

The text discusses and enquires about the validity of the dichotomy – still prevailing in architectural discourses - between city and countryside, and the conceptual dilemmas that this prevalence raises within a contemporary world that has shrunk through the speed of telecommunications, Satellite networks, virtual hyper-connectedness of the Internet, and ultra-rapid media of air transport. Refuting the schematism of this dichotomy, the article reviews the emergence of a single global metropolitan area that encompasses, inside itself, what is usually considered the non-urban.

Pedro Ignacio Alonso, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Arquitecto y magíster en Arquitectura, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Doctor en Arquitectura, Architectural Association, Londres. Es profesor asociado y jefe del Programa de Doctorado en Arquitectura y Estudios Urbanos en la Universidad Católica de Chile. Es profesor visitante en la Architectural Association de Londres y fue Princeton- Mellon Fellow 2015–2016 en la Universidad de Princeton. En 2014, su pabellón Monolith Controversies, co-curado con Hugo Palmarola, obtuvo el León de Plata en la 14a Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia. Es autor de los libros Space Race Archaeologies: Photography, Biographies, and Design (DOMPublishers, 2016), ARQ Docs Pedro Alonso (Ediciones ARQ, 2016), Deserta: ecología e industria en el desierto de Atacama (Ediciones ARQ,
2012) y, junto a Hugo Palmarola, Panel (Architectural Association, 2014) y Monolith Controversies (Hatje Cantz, 2014). En 2019 fue arquitecto residente en la Fundación Rockefeller en Bellagio, Italia, y cocuró la exposición “Flying Panels: How Concrete Panels Changed the World” en el Centro Sueco de Arquitectura y Diseño ArkDes (2019-2020). En 2022 cocuró junto a Pamela Prado “Cycles. The Architects Who Never Threw Anything Away” en la Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa.
